Completed in August of 2022, the new 2- story building is a 14,824 square-foot, steel framed/exterior plaster modular building with a capacity of 528 students. The program includes 11 classrooms, restrooms, an elevator, and utility rooms. The buildings mass and scale reflect and complement the existing campus buildings and the adjacent residential neighborhood. The classrooms are designed to accommodate vocational skills, therapy, state of the art computer technology, robotics, math, ceramics, and functional academics.
The building’s “L” shape design was integrated into the site and adjacent classroom buildings to provide a private recreational and outdoor learning area. The large sliding solar tinted NanaWalls allows for simultaneous indoor and outdoor learning spaces.
DC Architects partnered with American Modular Systems to efficiently construct the new building using modular construction. This method reduced the building's environmental impact while also meeting the District's dual emphasis on wellness and energy efficiency. Indoor environmental quality was achieved with high volume ceilings to help provide comfort and several operable windows offer natural ventilation. Finishes such as tackable wall surfaces with high recycled content, low-VOC primer and paints improve indoor air quality. The cool roof absorbs less heat for better energy performance. The building exterior is accentuated with green architectural pop-outs and site applied stucco as well as metal sunshades which contribute to the building's energy efficiency.
